This campaign was established in 1993 in the United States and currently has active groups in over 100 cities around the world. This is primarily and education programme as education is the most effective weapon in the war on drugs.

The Drug-Free Marshalls programme is run wherever youth can be reached and involves interactive education of youth on the “Truth About Drugs” through visual and other communication aides. Youth then describe through an essay, poster or performance how they can contribute to a drug-free community. They can then be sworn in as Drug-Free Marshalls and become part of a DFM club.

Interaction with and involvement of the youth are keys to the success of this programme.

“Action is the only remedy to indifference.
Whenever and wherever human beings endure
suffering and humiliation, take sides.
Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.
Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

Eli Weisel
1986 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech
